Logo using back solder mask shortcircut?

philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 06:55 AM
Hey, I have a quick question, on a PCB I was thinking of drawing a logo using back solder mask but I was wondering if this will shortcircut all the vias it intersects with?
Robert Feranec , 12-27-2024, 07:08 AM
do you mean to remove solder mask in shape of your logo?
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 07:26 AM
Yes, I think I saw you use this approach in one of your videos making the small circuit board and enclosure with your logo

Here is a bigger picture

BTW, thank you so much for your videos, Robert. They have been the most amazing resource! I am so thankful!

I went from 0 experience to making this because of you!
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 07:37 AM
I know there is certainly room for improvement :)
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 07:37 AM
But thanks!

I'd buy you a drink if I ever saw you in-person in the bay area

In your pictures you show white solder resist (solder mask) and not black.
Production wise, I mainly see problems near the high density Sub-D connector, but there are some other places too.
Usage wise, you would not be able to plug in the a USB connector as that is not on the board edge.
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 09:55 PM
Those two ends I think are grooved and can be broken off
QDrives , 12-27-2024, 10:02 PM
A V-cut?
Usually a kind of pizza cutter is used to break it off. Or it is wiggled (bend) up and down. In both cases the connector is blocking access.
Also note that you often have burs and you may want to out it in a housing. Those burs may need attention to get it in the housing.

Thanks for the advice
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 10:51 PM
Yes
philipdestroyer , 12-27-2024, 10:51 PM
So basically it would be an issue, right?
QDrives , 12-28-2024, 01:09 PM
Correct. I would not put a V-cut under a connector like that.
Can the V-cut be put on the long edges?
But the most important question is in part: why did you add it?
Robert Feranec , 12-30-2024, 01:37 PM
it looks like V-Cut .. what software do you use? E.g. EasyEDA will add holders for PCB Assembly automatically and it will look like that. It would be aproblem if you test boards with them, if not, it is not a problem because you can break it before using the boards.

about the solder mask - you can remove it in the shape of logo, but I would not do that in the areas with tracks. Tracks in these areas may have different impedance but also these places may be more sensitive for dust and dirt and touching ... If you would like to do that, then maybe in the area without tracks or in the area where you can use one big solid polygon? Or possibly you can consider to do it on silkscreen? Simply, I would not uncover tracks unless it is required.
